Synopsis:-

In Plans & Projects we’re always on the lookout for practical items to make and you don’t much more useful than Alan Holtham’s table/bench/storage unit designed to store in wicker baskets the sort of clutter that can heap up in hallways. This comes with one of our special A2 free plans as does Anthony Bailey’s Mission suite ‘compactum’ (small wardrobe with drawer to you and me). Other projects include a rose arbour with concrete-lined planters and trellis by Don Phillips, a radiator cover by Anthony and a scrollsawn hanging basket by Fred and Julie Byrnes. In the Learning Zone we’ve got John Bullar constructing frames and panels for carcasses, Peter Benson exercising your letter-carving skills, Colin Simpson showing you how to hollow end grain while making a pestle and mortar, and Michael Huntley demonstrating how to cut to accurate length in his Let’s Get Woodworking series. For the more advanced, Alan Holtham rips curved sections on the bandsaw and Mark Baker shares 10 Top Tips for using a cordless circular saw. This useful little beast is the subject of our Kit & Tools Focus this month, and in this section Mark tests AEG’s cordless combi and goes head to head with its NiCD and Li-ion battery options. Mark Cass proves the worth of workshop gizmos and we unearth lots of kit for our new Hot Stuff pages. And because spring is here and there’s nothing to beat the sound of leather on willow, Andrea Hargreaves gets an insight into how a cricket bat is made. Howzat!
